Description

Keen to ditch the ‘roles’ and implement full-strength lit circles/book clubs?

This online course is for you if you’ve:

  • found yourself fumbling your way through Lit Circles/ Book Clubs but aren’t really sure of what you’re doing.
  • ever wondered if there’s more to Lit Circles /Book Clubs than roles and stilted conversation.
  • used Lit Circles / Book Clubs with your students but want to know more about what full strength implementation is meant to look like.

The course:

In this self-paced mini-course, Mardi Gorman and I have gone back to the original Lit Circles research to find out what full strength implementation is actually supposed to look like.

We discuss the original intent of this small group instructional practice and the reasons you’d want to use it with your students.

We watch a video of a Lit Circle in action and pull it apart to help you implement more effective book club discussions with your students. (We also tell you why we prefer to call them Book Clubs instead of Lit Circles)

And finally, we also provide you with downloadable resources to help banish Lit Circles ‘roles’ and move towards more authentic, rich and engaging discussion about texts. (Yay!)

This 1.5 hour online course starts as soon as you sign up and is divided into the following lessons:

  • Lesson 1: The what and why of Lit Circles / Book Clubs
  • Lesson 2: The History of Lit Circles
  • Lesson 3: Key ingredients of a good Book Club
  • Lesson 4: Rich discussion in a Book Club
  • Lesson 5: Preparing for the Book Club
  • Lesson 6: Implementation Tips
  • Lesson 7: Evaluation of the Book Club
  • Bonus: Recorded Q&A discussion

This course is suitable for:

  • Pre-service teachers
  • Graduate teachers
  • Established teachers who want to start or strengthen Lit Circles in their classroom

Feedback from previous participants of this course:

I found the history of Lit Circles interesting and loved the extremely practical information for implementing in classrooms. I really like the way questions can be scaffolded and broken down for students; Keeping it simple but going deeper.

Julie

I appreciated hearing about the history. The most valuable thing were your suggestions and connection of Lit Circles to the Speaking and Listening curriculum, as well as providing sentence starters for talk.

Excellent information about Book Club – very affirming for someone who is currently running Book Clubs in my class. Also helpful tips for moving my students to the ‘next steps’ in their learning.
